Word MCP Live — Claude Code MCP server: Word edits and setup
This MCP server lets an AI assistant edit Microsoft Word documents, including tracked revisions and comments. Use it to review or format documents without moving text by hand.
claude mcp add --env MCP_AUTHOR=<MCP_AUTHOR> --env MCP_AUTHOR_INITIALS=<MCP_AUTHOR_INITIALS> --transport stdio word-mcp-live -- uvx word-mcp-liveWhat Word MCP Live does
Word MCP Live connects an assistant to Microsoft Word for text and formatting changes, tracked revisions, and comments. Editing a document while it is open works on Windows and macOS, using COM on Windows and JXA on macOS. On macOS, comment replies and status changes are unavailable.
The server can also work with saved .docx files on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The README specifies Python 3.11 or newer for installation with uvx. Docker supports cross-platform tools, but editing an open Word document requires a native Windows installation. Set MCP_AUTHOR and MCP_AUTHOR_INITIALS to choose the name and initials shown on revisions and comments.
What it helps with
- edit a Word document while it is open
- mark revisions for another person to review
- apply consistent formatting to headings
- leave a comment on a document passage
- create or modify a saved
.docxfile
Example prompts for the agent
- Replace the company name in the open document and mark the change for review.
- Apply consistent formatting to the document headings.
- Leave a comment on the selected paragraph using my initials.
