What Tiger MCP does

Tiger MCP ships inside Tiger CLI, the command-line tool for Tiger Cloud. The server runs in a Docker container, ghcr.io/timescale/tiger-cli:0.26.0, over stdio, so there is no network port to open. Through it the assistant can list services, run SQL, read the schema and pull metrics.

You need TIGER_PUBLIC_KEY and TIGER_SECRET_KEY before anything works — the container will not authenticate without them. Docker has to be installed too, since the launch command goes through docker run. The MCP tools accept service IDs only; names are rejected, so keep the ID handy in your prompts.

Worth adding if your project already runs on Tiger Cloud and you want the agent to read the data itself instead of taking your word for it. Against a local PostgreSQL instance it adds a layer you do not need, because the server targets Tiger Cloud services.

What it helps with

  • list Tiger Cloud services from inside the agent
  • run a SQL query without opening psql
  • inspect table and TimescaleDB hypertable schemas
  • fetch service metrics for a time range
  • create a read-only database role

Example prompts for the agent

  • List all services in my Tiger Cloud project
  • Run SELECT now() against service ID abc123
  • Show the database schema and the installed PostgreSQL extensions
