skillmd — Claude Code MCP server: features and setup
Search the SkillMD registry, inspect skills, run checks, and install them through an MCP-capable agent. Useful when you want to find or vet a SKILL.md in chat.
claude mcp add --transport http skillmd https://api.skillmd.com/mcpWhat skillmd does
With skillmd connected, an agent can look up entries in the SkillMD registry, inspect a skill, check it, and install it. That puts registry tasks in the conversation instead of requiring a separate terminal workflow.
For Claude Code, connect over HTTP with claude mcp add --transport http skillmd https://api.skillmd.com/mcp. You can also run the server locally using npx -y skillmds, with SKILLMD_TOKEN and SKILLMD_API supplied as environment variables. The local setup needs values for both.
What it helps with
- search the registry for a skill
- inspect a skill before installing it
- check a skill for format issues
- install a registry skill through an agent
Example prompts for the agent
- Find a SkillMD skill for working with PDF files.
- Check this skill before installing it and explain any issues.
- Install the
anthropic/pdfskill.
