opentargets — Claude Code MCP server: features and setup
Query Open Targets for targets, diseases, drugs, and supporting evidence from an AI coding client. Useful for investigating gene-disease links or possible drug repurposing.
claude mcp add opentargets -- uvx opentargets-mcpWhat opentargets does
opentargets connects an MCP client to Open Targets data. Ask about an entity by its name or identifier, then retrieve details on targets, diseases, drugs, variants, and evidence. It can also surface candidates for repurposing a drug. Results are returned as structured data.
The server provides 68 tools, including entity search, ID mapping, evidence lookup, and GraphQL queries. When a name matches multiple records, it presents candidates to choose from. Access is read-only, so the server cannot change Open Targets records. Setup requires uv and Python 3.10 or later; an Open Targets API key is not needed.
What it helps with
- look up drug targets by name or identifier
- trace evidence connecting a gene to a disease
- retrieve adverse-event information for a drug
- find possible candidates for drug repurposing
Example prompts for the agent
- Find drugs that target
EGFRand report their development stages. - Which genes have the strongest association with asthma?
- Show the evidence connecting
BRAFwith melanoma.
