NOAA Tides and Currents — Claude Code MCP server: how to install
Connects NOAA CO-OPS marine and oceanographic records to your coding agent. Delivers tide predictions, sea levels, tidal currents, and coastal weather.
claude mcp add --transport http noaa-tides-and-currents-mcp https://perigeetides.com/mcpWhat NOAA Tides and Currents does
This MCP server grants access to 25 tools querying oceanographic feeds across the United States. You do not need any API tokens because NOAA data sources are public. The package fetches water level series, extreme marks, current velocities, wind parameters, and water temperature. It also computes solar events and lunar phases right on your machine.
Span restrictions are checked before calls reach external servers. For instance, single-minute records allow spans up to 4 days, while 6-minute series cap at 31 days. Metric outputs carry mixed dimensions: wind speeds arrive in meters per second, but current speeds use centimeters per second. Pay attention to station targets. Great Lakes stations run on IGLD datums and provide zero tide predictions.
You can run the server locally over stdio with Node or connect via streamable HTTP. Payloads return as formatted markdown summaries or pure JSON.
What it helps with
- retrieve tide height forecasts and daily high-low events
- monitor water velocity and heading across ADCP depth bins
- fetch coastal weather alerts and offshore wind forecasts
- analyze high tide flooding frequency and sea level projections
Example prompts for the agent
- Check tide predictions for station 9414290 across the next three days.
- Run the boating_conditions prompt for coordinates near Chesapeake Bay.
- Find the closest NOAA stations to 37.8, -122.4 and pull their current wind speed.

Questions about NOAA Tides and Currents
How do I install NOAA Tides and Currents in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add noaa-tides-and-currents -- npx -y @ryancardin/noaa-tides-currents-mcp-server in your terminal. For hosted HTTP, run claude mcp add --transport http noaa-tides-and-currents https://perigeetides.com/mcp.
Is an API key required to query NOAA stations?
No credentials are required. The CO-OPS endpoints operate publicly without authentication barriers.
Why are tide predictions missing for Great Lakes stations?
Great Lakes bodies experience negligible tidal cycles. Stations there measure elevation against IGLD datums rather than tidal baselines, so predictive harmonic models do not exist for them.
