New Era Syringe Pump — Claude Code MCP server: what it does & setup
Controls New Era NE-1000 syringe pumps through RS-232 serial commands. Useful for microfluidic dosing, liquid handling, and automated lab experiments with an AI agent.
claude mcp add --env LABMCP_ADDRESS=<LABMCP_ADDRESS> --env LABMCP_SIMULATE=<LABMCP_SIMULATE> --env LABMCP_READ_ONLY=<LABMCP_READ_ONLY> --env LABMCP_LIMITS=<LABMCP_LIMITS> --transport stdio new-era-syringe-pump -- uvx labmcp-new-eraWhat New Era Syringe Pump does
The server sends RS-232 Basic commands to control NE-1000 syringe pumps. An AI model can pick preset dimensions for Hamilton or BD syringes, which determines plunger movement. When physical hardware is disconnected, a wire-level simulator tests the run without wasting reagents.
Daisy-chain wiring accommodates up to 100 pumps on unique network addresses. However, a single serial port can be claimed by only one server process at a time. The pump expects 19200 baud communication out of the box.
Starting an infusion or withdrawal overwrites phases 1 and 2 of the pump's stored program. In addition, updating the syringe inside diameter clears all accumulated volume readings. Safety limits restrict transfers to 20 mL per command unless configured otherwise.
What it helps with
- dispense exact liquid volumes at controlled flow rates
- withdraw reagents into a syringe automatically
- read pump status and accumulated volume totals
- test automated dosing steps on a software simulator
Example prompts for the agent
- Configure a 10 mL BD syringe and dispense 2 mL at 0.5 mL/min.
- Check the current pump state and report any active alarms.
- Withdraw 250 uL at a rate of 100 uL/min.

Questions about New Era Syringe Pump
How to install New Era Syringe Pump in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add labmcp-new-era -- uvx labmcp-new-era. If you need environment variables for connection and limits, run `claude mcp add --env LABMCP_ADDRESS=<LABMCP_ADDRESS> --env LABMCP_SIMULATE=<LABMCP_SIMULATE> --env LABMCP_READ_ONLY=<LABMCP_READ_ONLY> --env LABMCP_LIMITS=<LABMCP_LIMITS> --transport stdio new-era-syringe-pump -- uvx labmcp-new-era`.
What does New Era Syringe Pump do?
It connects NE-1000 series syringe pumps to AI agents over RS-232. The agent sets syringe parameters, runs fluid infusion or withdrawal, and reads instrument status.
What safety caps are applied by default?
The server limits transfers to 20 mL and caps the flow rate at 10 mL/min. You can customize these limits at launch with configuration flags.
