What Footgun does

Footgun provides an MCP registry of verified API pitfalls, including quiet deprecations, hidden limits, and settings that appear to save without taking effect. An agent can consult these findings while writing code. Each public entry includes symptoms, a cause, a fix, and the date it was last checked.

The Claude Code plugin adds /footgun:scan, which checks the project locally against known issues for its exact package versions. Your code stays on your machine; the service receives rule downloads and an anonymous findings count. The auto_context setting adds a brief note at the start of a session and is on by default.

Searching and submitting traps for review do not require an account. Confirming a trap does require an API key, so findings cannot be confirmed without one.

What it helps with

  • scan a project for known API breakages
  • match known issues to the package versions in use
  • submit a newly found trap for review
  • add known API pitfalls to session context

Example prompts for the agent

  • Run /footgun:scan to check this project for known API pitfalls.
  • Check this code against issues affecting its current package versions.
  • Add a short note about verified API traps to the start of the session.
