What foehn does

The MCP server connects an agent to MeteoSwiss open data, covering weather observations, forecasts, and radar collections. The project also includes a CLI and Python API for downloading and working with these datasets; the MCP connection lets an agent access them through chat.

In Claude Code, the server runs through foehn with the mcp argument. The package requires Python 3.11 or later. To open gridded datasets as xarray or Zarr, install the foehn[grids] extra; without it, those formats are unavailable.

What it helps with

  • query weather conditions for a location
  • retrieve observations from a weather station
  • check available forecast or radar data
  • ask an agent about MeteoSwiss open datasets

Example prompts for the agent

  • Check the latest weather data for Bern from MeteoSwiss.
  • Find daily readings for station BER and summarize them.
  • Look up available radar data and describe what it shows.

How to install foehn
