excel-vision-mcp — Claude Code MCP server for Excel
This MCP server lets an agent read Excel content with embedded images and formatting, then edit workbook cells, formulas, and appearance.
claude mcp add excel-vision-mcp -- uvx excel-vision-mcpWhat excel-vision-mcp does
The server reads cell text and formulas, marks formatting such as strikethrough and fill color, and returns embedded images linked to their cells. That gives an agent access to a diagram placed in a worksheet and helps distinguish a struck-through row from an active one. Hidden rows and columns are skipped unless include_hidden=true is enabled.
It can also create workbooks, edit cells and formulas, add images, and set formatting. Image lookup first maps pictures to cells, then scans the XLSX archive for others. You can run it with uvx without installing the package separately; Python 3.11+ is listed as a requirement. Files are processed locally. By default, the server can read and write any Excel file your account can access.
What it helps with
- read workbook text, formulas, and embedded images
- locate a diagram by its worksheet cell
- identify struck-through or highlighted rows
- edit workbook cells and formulas
- search text across Excel sheets
Example prompts for the agent
- Read
requirements.xlsxand explain the diagram in cellB12. - Find struck-through rows and yellow-highlighted cells in
report.xlsx. - Create an Excel workbook with a Summary sheet and add formulas to calculate the totals.
