ckb — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install

Supplies coding assistants with code graphs, impact analysis, and secret detection directly via MCP.

What ckb does

The server turns a repository into a structured knowledge graph. Instead of scanning with grep, assistants trace call paths and module dependencies. This prevents unexpected regressions. It pinpoints affected tests and scans for secrets across 26 patterns.

Configurable presets keep context usage low. The standard core preset loads 25 tools out of 110, consuming around 4k tokens. Operations like explore and prepareChange bundle several actions into a single step. Without a SCIP index, the backend relies on basic tree-sitter parsing.

What it helps with

  • trace call hierarchies before modifying shared components
  • isolate impacted test suites without executing entire test runs
  • audit the codebase for leaked credentials across 26 patterns
  • detect unreferenced legacy code with confidence ratings

Example prompts for the agent

  • What is the blast radius if I refactor the UserService module?
  • Trace all endpoints that route into the ProcessPayment handler
  • Check which engineers own the internal/api package

Questions about ckb

How to install ckb in Claude Code?

Add it to your setup by running claude mcp add ckb -- npx -y @tastehub/ckb in your terminal.

What does ckb do?

It equips language models with architectural maps, call graphs, and risk scoring. It helps assistants identify dead code, detect code owners, and find impacted tests.

Do I need to run the SCIP indexer?

Generating an index with ckb index is recommended for deep symbol navigation, but not strictly required. Without it, the server operates via built-in tree-sitter parsing.
