AgentGate · agentkitai — Claude Code MCP server: human approval for agent actions
A gate for what your agent is allowed to do: policies approve harmless calls, block risky ones, and send the rest to a person.
claude mcp add agentgate -- npx -y @agentkitai/agentgate-mcpWhat AgentGate does
The agent asks before it acts. Send an email, remove a file, ship to production — each request hits a policy engine that answers on its own or hands the decision to a human. Approvals come through a web dashboard, Slack, Discord or email.
There are five packages: core with schemas and the policy engine, a Hono API server, a TypeScript SDK, the MCP server and webhook delivery that retries on failure. Storage runs on SQLite or PostgreSQL, and docker compose up brings the whole stack online.
You need Node.js with npx, plus a gateway already running somewhere. The bootstrap step prints the admin key once — a missing AGENTGATE_API_KEY will stop the demo and authenticated calls. Worth knowing: the MCP package is only the client side. No gateway, no one to approve anything.
What it helps with
- let routine agent actions through without a manual check
- deny file deletion or deployment by rule
- route unclear requests to Slack, Discord or email
- keep a log of every request, decision and action
- start the gateway and its database with one
docker compose up
Example prompts for the agent
- Connect AgentGate and list the requests waiting for my decision
- Send a production deploy request through AgentGate and tell me which policy fired
- Set up a webhook for the decision event and confirm the retry went through

Questions about AgentGate
How do I install AgentGate in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add agentgate -- npx -y @agentkitai/agentgate-mcp. Then start the gateway itself and set AGENTGATE_API_KEY from the bootstrap output.
What does AgentGate do?
It gates agent actions on policy and human approval, so safe calls pass, dangerous ones are refused, and the rest wait for someone to confirm in the dashboard, Slack, Discord or email.
What does AgentGate need to work?
A running gateway server with its database, and the API key in AGENTGATE_API_KEY. The admin key appears only once during bootstrap, so keep it.
