What api-designer does

The subagent runs on the sonnet model and uses native Claude Code tools: Read, Write, Edit, Bash, Glob, and Grep. It inspects your project context to design interfaces using API-first principles.

The workflow moves from domain analysis directly into API specification and developer tooling. The agent drafts OpenAPI 3.1 definitions, configures pagination schemes, and sets up webhook payloads with error formats. It also covers versioning methods through URIs or headers, along with OAuth 2.0 or JWT authentication.

Quick scripts do not need this rigor. But if you maintain public APIs or shared team contracts, validating architecture before writing code saves headaches.

What it helps with

  • design REST endpoint structures or GraphQL schemas
  • generate OpenAPI 3.1 specification documents
  • configure pagination, webhook payloads, and error handling
  • plan API versioning via headers or URI paths

Example prompts for the agent

  • Design a REST API for the order processing service with an OpenAPI 3.1 specification
  • Draft a GraphQL schema with mutations and JWT authentication strategy
