Danish payments firm Inpay hit with injunction over AML failings

Denmark's financial regulator Finanstilsynet has issued an injunction against fintech Inpay over serious violations of anti-money laundering legislation. The company is temporarily barred from onboarding new clients from the online gambling sector until the breaches are remedied.

The ban follows an AML review conducted in March 2026. Finanstilsynet found inadequate due diligence when customer circumstances changed, no assessment of the purpose and nature of business relationships with high-risk iGaming clients, and weak outgoing transaction monitoring of gambling operators. The regulator said the failings affect most of Inpay's client portfolio — predominantly companies outside Denmark and the EU that account for a significant share of transaction volume.

Finstilsynet said the gaps create a real risk of supporting illegal gambling activity and providing payment services without a licence, which carries particularly high money laundering and terrorism financing risk.

Inpay is a Copenhagen-based payment provider founded in 2008 that serves online gambling and other verticals with cross-border transfers in fiat and crypto. In 2022 the Financial Times named it Denmark's fastest-growing company in the FT 1000 ranking.

Inpay said it has taken the regulator's decision seriously. The company halted onboarding of new gambling clients on 27 July, before the formal injunction. Existing clients in iGaming and other sectors will continue without disruption. Inpay holds a licence under the Danish Payments Act and operates offices in Copenhagen and London.
