UK PM will revoke aim to permit amid ‘crackdown’ on retail gambling

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced plans to tighten regulation of slot arcades and betting shops, including a revision of the aim to permit planning approach.

The government intends to grant local authorities new powers to block undesirable outlets, including vape stores, betting shops and rogue businesses. The initiative follows Burnham's criticism of Adult Gaming Centres (AGCs), for which additional restrictions have also been proposed.

For the retail gambling sector this marks fresh regulatory pressure: local councils will gain more control over the opening and operation of land-based venues.
