Bid to bring casinos to New Jersey racetracks misses deadline for November’s ballot

A ballot measure to permit full-scale casinos at Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford and Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport missed the deadline for New Jersey's November 2026 ballot. The earliest possible voter referendum is now November 2027.

Backers sought to expand casino operations beyond Atlantic City to capture spending that might otherwise flow to New York City once three new casinos open there. The initiative failed to meet the procedural deadline required to place the question before voters.

The delay preserves the state's current model, which confines full-scale casinos to Atlantic City, and gives New York more time to launch competing properties before New Jersey can revisit the rules.
