Google releases September 2026 spam update

Our write-up of a story first reported by Semrush Blog

Google releases September 2026 spam update

Google has begun rolling out its September 2026 spam update. The company has not yet assigned a formal name to the release.

The rollout will take up to two weeks, which means ranking drops may appear days after launch rather than immediately. That makes diagnosis harder: a sudden traffic loss could be the update, a technical glitch, competitor activity, or seasonal shift.

For sites running doorways, private blog networks or aggressive SEO tactics, the two-week window is a risk zone. Traffic can drop a week into the rollout, and without tracking Google's announcements it is easy to attribute the loss to anything but the algorithm.

White-hat projects face less risk but still need attention. Sites that used grey-hat link building or auto-generated content should check logs and analytics now.

What to do

Monitor rankings daily. Use Ahrefs, SE Ranking or any tracker that logs day-by-day changes. If you see a sharp drop, compare the date with Google's official announcement.

Check indexation. A site: search in Google will show how many pages remain in the index. Fewer pages may mean some content was filtered.

Do not panic early. Positions can fluctuate during rollout. The final picture will only be clear after two weeks.

Takeaway

Google's spam updates come regularly, but the staggered rollout complicates diagnosis. Two weeks is enough time for traffic to erode quietly if you are not following search news. Keep an update calendar and check the Google Search Central account.
