terraform-specialist — Claude Code skill: infrastructure as code
A Claude skill that walks the agent through Terraform and OpenTofu module design, state handling and CI automation. Useful when infrastructure lives in code.
npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill development/terraform-specialistWhat terraform-specialist does
The skill gives the agent a Terraform and OpenTofu specialist role. It covers module and environment design, state backends, workspaces and multi-cloud stacks, plus policy-as-code and IaC pipelines. The workflow inside runs in four steps: pin down environments, providers and security constraints; design modules and pick a remote backend; set up plan/apply with reviews and policies; then check drift, cost and rollback.
Safety rules are spelled out too. Plans get reviewed before anything is applied, and state files stay protected with no secrets sitting in them. The skill also lists where it does not fit: a one-off manual infrastructure change, a different IaC tool, or no way to keep state remotely. Without a remote backend some of the workflows just will not run, so settle that first.
Install it with npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill development/terraform-specialist; the skill file lands at ~/.claude/skills/terraform-specialist/SKILL.md.
What it helps with
- split infrastructure into modules and environments
- pick a remote backend and set up state locking
- add policy checks to the plan/apply pipeline
- spot drift between state and real infrastructure
- plan a move from Terraform to OpenTofu
Example prompts for the agent
- Design a VPC module with separate staging and prod environments
- Set up a remote state backend with DynamoDB locking
- Add policy checks to the pipeline before apply
