swarm-planner — Claude Code skill: plans and installation
Builds implementation plans that show task dependencies for parallel agent work. Use it before coding changes in an unfamiliar codebase.
npx skills add am-will/codex-skills --skill swarm-planner -a claude-codeWhat swarm-planner does
The skill inspects the project structure, dependencies, and existing patterns, then splits the work into standalone tasks. Each task records an identifier, depends_on entries, relevant file locations, and validation criteria. Work with no unresolved prerequisites can run in parallel.
For external libraries, frameworks, or APIs, it retrieves current documentation through Context7 before planning; web search is the fallback. It pauses for clarification when the architecture, scope, constraints, or priorities are unclear. Check Context7 access first when the plan involves external dependencies.
The plan is written to <topic>-plan.md in the current directory. A subagent then checks for missing links, bad ordering, edge cases, and plan gaps, and actionable feedback is incorporated before completion. The skill plans work rather than writing the implementation.
What it helps with
- split a change into standalone tasks
- map prerequisites between implementation steps
- check current documentation for an external API
- write a plan to
<topic>-plan.md - review a task plan with a subagent
Example prompts for the agent
- Create an implementation plan for this feature and show dependencies between tasks.
- Inspect the project, ask about unclear constraints, then write the plan to
<topic>-plan.md. - Plan this change with parallel task groups and a subagent review.
How to install swarm-planner
1Skills CLI (Vercel)
npx skills add am-will/codex-skills --skill swarm-planner -a claude-code2Manually: put the files in place
~/.claude/skills/swarm-planner/SKILL.mdCopy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/swarm-planner/
1Skills CLI (Vercel)
npx skills add am-will/codex-skills --skill swarm-planner -a codex2Manually: put the files in place
.agents/skills/swarm-planner/SKILL.mdFor all projects use ~/.agents/skills/
1Skills CLI (Vercel)

Questions about swarm-planner
How do I install swarm-planner in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add am-will/codex-skills --skill swarm-planner -a claude-code, then run npx skills add am-will/codex-skills --skill swarm-planner -a claude-code again. The skill file is located at ~/.claude/skills/swarm-planner/SKILL.md.
What does swarm-planner do?
It produces implementation plans with explicit task dependencies, file locations, and validation checks. The output is structured for agents that can take independent tasks in parallel.
Why does swarm-planner ask questions before planning?
It stops when the architecture, scope, constraints, or priorities have more than one reasonable interpretation. The questions resolve ambiguity before the plan is created.
