planner — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
Splits bug fixes and feature development into structured sprints and atomic tasks. It helps you design software changes before writing any code.
npx skills add am-will/codex-skills --skill planner -a claude-codeWhat planner does
The skill inspects codebase architecture and related components, then asks between five and ten clarifying questions regarding scope, edge cases, and tech constraints. When external libraries or APIs are involved, it pulls documentation using the Context7 skill. After clarifying requirements, it drafts an overview with incremental sprints where each milestone yields testable work.
Tasks within each sprint stay atomic and committable. The plan lists file paths, dependencies, and verification criteria. The skill saves the output as a Markdown file ending in -plan.md. Right after saving, it analyzes potential pitfalls and can prompt for up to three details about missing steps or edge cases.
Planner strictly avoids implementing code. If you expect an agent to start editing source files right away, this skill will slow you down because its only job is drafting the roadmap.
What it helps with
- decompose a bug fix into atomic, committable tasks
- clarify technical scope with targeted questions before coding
- draft sprint structures with testable increments and rollback steps
- catch missing dependencies and edge cases ahead of time
Example prompts for the agent
- /planner map out token authentication in src/auth.ts
- break this down into tasks: migrate cache layer to redis
- /plan outline steps to resolve session memory leaks

It surveys your codebase, asks clarifying questions, and compiles a Markdown implementation plan. The document includes sprints, atomic tasks, acceptance criteria, and rollback instructions.
Does planner implement the code for you?
No, planner only produces the plan file. It identifies gotchas and asks follow-up questions, leaving code execution to you or subsequent prompts.
