spreadsheet — Claude Code skill: Excel and CSV work in Python
A skill for spreadsheet tasks: build workbooks with formulas, edit existing files, compute metrics and add charts. Useful when formulas and styling must survive the edit.
npx claude-code-templates@latest --skill document-processing/spreadsheetWhat spreadsheet does
The skill gives the agent a fixed routine for tabular work: pin down the file type and the goal first, then pick the tool. Editing .xlsx goes through openpyxl; analysis and .csv/.tsv files go through pandas. Layout matters? The agent renders the sheet to PNG so someone can look at it.
Formula rules are spelled out. Derived values stay as formulas, not pasted numbers, and cell references replace hardcoded constants. Error values such as #REF! and #DIV/0! get checked. Note the catch: openpyxl never evaluates formulas, so results appear only when the file opens in Excel or Sheets.
For visual review you need LibreOffice (soffice) and Poppler (pdftoppm) — without them rendering does not happen. Packages install with uv pip install openpyxl pandas, and matplotlib is listed for chart-heavy work.
What it helps with
- build a workbook with formulas and formatting from scratch
- edit an existing
.xlsxwithout breaking references - aggregate a CSV and write the result back to a sheet
- attach charts and tidy up number formats
- render a sheet to catch layout problems before sending
Example prompts for the agent
- Build
report.xlsxwith monthly revenue, totals as formulas, and a styled header row - Analyze
sales.csv, sum revenue by region, and write the summary intosummary.xlsx - Add a chart for the revenue column on the
KPIsheet and check that no text overflows its cells

What does the spreadsheet skill do?
It guides the agent through creating, editing and analyzing spreadsheets: .xlsx with openpyxl, .csv and .tsv with pandas, with checks on formulas and formatting.
What has to be installed for it to work?
The openpyxl and pandas Python packages, plus matplotlib for chart-heavy work. Visual layout checks also need LibreOffice and Poppler.
