quickgo-skill — Codex skill: what it does, how to install
Queries the QuickGO API to fetch Gene Ontology terms, protein annotations, and ontology hierarchies as compact summaries.
npx skills add openai/plugins --skill quickgo-skill -a codexWhat quickgo-skill does
The skill handles QuickGO REST API calls through scripts/rest_request.py. It accepts a single JSON object on stdin containing base_url, target path, and headers such as Accept: application/json. Common lookup routes include ontology/go/terms/, ancestry traversal endpoints, and annotation/search for gene products.
Results arrive as concise markdown summaries by default. When full payloads are necessary, setting save_raw=true writes the raw JSON response to disk and prints the saved path. The skill also handles Solr backend downtime on the annotation/search route by falling back to direct ontology lookups or UniProt annotations.
Install this if you work with Gene Ontology data or protein annotations in Codex. Skip it if your project does not need EBI QuickGO services.
What it helps with
- fetch Gene Ontology term metadata and ancestor nodes
- search annotations for specific gene product identifiers
- traverse parent and child relationships in the ontology graph
- write full QuickGO API payloads to disk with save_raw
Example prompts for the agent
- Look up GO:0006915 and list its ancestor terms
- Search the first 10 QuickGO annotations for gene product P04637
- Get term details for GO:0008150 and save the raw JSON payload

Questions about quickgo-skill
How to install quickgo-skill in Codex?
Run npx skills add openai/plugins --skill quickgo-skill -a codex in your project terminal.
What does quickgo-skill do?
It routes Gene Ontology and annotation queries to the EBI QuickGO REST API using scripts/rest_request.py and returns compact summaries.
What happens if QuickGO annotation search fails?
Because the annotation Solr backend can be fragile, the skill falls back to ontology term lookups or UniProt GO annotations.
