progress — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
progress checks the live state of a long-running task and sorts the result into requests, blockers, current work, next steps, and completed items.
npx skills add timschoch/skilly --skill progress -a claude-codeWhat progress does
The /progress skill produces a compact task report from the current project state. It compares the conversation with the task list, the Git working tree, pull request and CI data, plus active subagents and background processes. Sources that do not apply are skipped.
The output uses five sections: “Needs you”, “Blocked”, “Now”, “Next”, and “Done”. This is a read-only skill. It does not edit files, execute write operations, or begin a new task. Git checks use git status --short and git log --oneline <default-branch>..HEAD; pull request details come from gh pr view ... when a PR exists.
A task is not treated as complete when its checklist says so but the related commit, push, or successful CI result is still missing. After installation, Claude Code loads the skill from ~/.claude/skills/progress/SKILL.md.
What it helps with
- show where a long-running task stopped
- surface decisions and actions that need the user
- locate blockers in CI, review, or background work
- compare task items with Git and pull request state
- order the remaining work into next steps
Example prompts for the agent
- Run
/progressand show me the current state of this task. - Use
/progressto check the task, Git state, and CI result. - Run
/progressand separate what you need from me.

Questions about progress
How do I install progress in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add timschoch/skilly --skill progress -a claude-code, then check ~/.claude/skills/progress/SKILL.md.
What does the progress skill do?
It builds a current report from the conversation, task list, Git state, pull request and CI details, and active background work. The report sorts findings into five task-status sections.
Does progress modify files or start work?
No. The skill only inspects state, avoids file edits and write commands, and stops after printing the report.
