jira-communication — Claude Code skill: Jira from the CLI
A skill that drives Jira through CLI scripts: issues, sprints, boards, comments, worklogs and attachments. Useful when MCP Atlassian is down or you run Jira Server/DC.
npx skills add netresearch/jira-skill --skill jira-communication -a claude-codeWhat jira-communication does
The skill hands your agent a set of Python scripts run through uv run. They come in three groups: core (jira-issue.py, jira-search.py, jira-worklog.py, jira-attachment.py, jira-setup.py, jira-validate.py), workflow (jira-create.py, jira-transition.py, jira-comment.py, jira-move.py, jira-sprint.py, jira-board.py, jira-version.py, tempo-account.py) and utility (jira-user.py, jira-fields.py, jira-link.py, jira-weblink.py, jira-worklog-query.py, jira-watchers.py, jira-qa-gather.py). Every script takes --help, --json, --quiet and --debug.
It fires on its own when a Jira URL or an issue key such as PROJ-123 shows up. From there it picks a verb by intent: jira-issue.py work KEY to triage a ticket, jira-issue.py qa KEY to open a review, jira-transition.py do to move status. If the ticket is not yours, or sits in a status where nobody is on it, work prints a !! CLAIM KEY notice on stderr with the commands to assign yourself and start work.
You need Python 3.11+ and uv, plus API access to a Jira Server/DC or Cloud instance. jira-setup.py handles auth. Before any wiki markup is posted, three gates run: dashes that Jira would render as strikethrough get escaped, the markup and ticket language are linted, and the instance renders the text and refuses the post if it comes back struck through. --force downgrades the findings to warnings, --no-auto-escape keeps the markup verbatim.
What it helps with
- triage a ticket and leave a comment as you work
- move an issue to another status in one call
- log time to a worklog and check the remaining estimate
- gather ticket data before a QA review
- create an issue or find one with a JQL search
Example prompts for the agent
- Triage PROJ-123 and tell me what has already been done on it
- Move PROJ-123 to In Progress and log 30 minutes
- Find every open issue in the PROJ project and list them
