apple-notes · nousresearch — Claude Code skill: Apple Notes via memo
Lets a coding agent read, search and write Apple Notes from the terminal through the memo CLI, with everything syncing over iCloud.
npx skills add NousResearch/hermes-agent --skill apple-notes -a claude-codeWhat apple-notes does
The skill hands the agent a terminal route into Apple Notes using memo. It lists notes, runs fuzzy text search, creates and edits entries, moves them between folders, and exports to HTML or Markdown. Writes go into Notes.app itself, so iCloud carries them to the other devices.
Most of the file is a command cheat sheet. memo notes prints everything, -s "query" searches, -f "Folder" narrows to one folder, and -e or -d open an interactive picker for editing and deleting. The -a flag launches $EDITOR and takes no title, so set the editor first with export EDITOR=vim. Export runs through -ex.
You need macOS with Notes.app. Install memo first with brew tap antoniorodr/memo && brew install antoniorodr/memo/memo, then grant Automation access when the system asks. A note holding images or attachments will not open for editing, and the interactive prompts need a real terminal. If your knowledge base lives in Obsidian, load the obsidian skill from the same repo instead.
What it helps with
- Save call notes somewhere that shows up on the iPhone
- Find an old note from a half-remembered phrase
- Refile notes into folders without leaving the terminal
- Export a note to Markdown for the repo
- Clear out drafts through the interactive picker
Example prompts for the agent
- Create a note in the "Projects" folder and put the task list from this file into it.
- Search Apple Notes for everything I wrote about deploys and give me a short list.
- Export the release note to Markdown.

Questions about apple-notes
How do I install apple-notes in Claude Code?
Run npx skills add NousResearch/hermes-agent --skill apple-notes -a claude-code. The skill file ends up at ~/.claude/skills/apple-notes/SKILL.md.
What does apple-notes do?
It gives the agent commands for Apple Notes through memo: listing, searching, creating, editing, deleting, moving notes between folders, and exporting to HTML or Markdown.
What does the skill need to work?
macOS with Notes.app, memo installed from Homebrew, and Automation permission for Notes.app in System Settings. Without those the agent cannot reach the notes at all.

# Apple Notes
Use `memo` to manage Apple Notes directly from the terminal. Notes sync across all Apple devices via iCloud.
## Prerequisites
- **macOS** with Notes.app
- Install: `brew tap antoniorodr/memo && brew install antoniorodr/memo/memo`
- Grant Automation access to Notes.app when prompted (System Settings → Privacy → Automation)
## When to Use
- User asks to create, view, or search Apple Notes
- Saving information to Notes.app for cross-device access
- Organizing notes into folders
- Exporting notes to Markdown/HTML
## When NOT to Use
- Obsidian vault management → use the `obsidian` skill
- Bear Notes → separate app (not supported here)
- Quick agent-only notes → use the `memory` tool instead
## Quick Reference
### View Notes
```bash
memo notes # List all notes
memo notes -f "Folder Name" # Filter by folder
memo notes -s "query" # Search notes (fuzzy)
```
### Create Notes
```bash
memo notes -a # Add a note (opens your $EDITOR)
memo notes -a -f "Folder Name" # Add a note into a specific folder
```
`-a`/`--add` is a bare flag — it opens your `$EDITOR` to compose the note; it does
not take a title argument. Use `-f/--folder` to target a folder. Set `$EDITOR`
first (e.g. `export EDITOR=vim`).
### Edit Notes
```bash
memo notes -e # Interactive selection to edit
```
### Delete Notes
```bash
memo notes -d # Interactive selection to delete
```
### Move Notes
```bash
memo notes -m # Move note to folder (interactive)
```
### Export Notes
```bash
memo notes -ex # Export to HTML/Markdown
```
## Limitations
- Cannot edit notes containing images or attachments
- Interactive prompts require terminal access (use pty=true if needed)
- macOS only — requires Apple Notes.app
## Rules
1. Prefer Apple Notes when user wants cross-device sync (iPhone/iPad/Mac)
2. Use the `memory` tool for agent-internal notes that don't need to sync
3. Use the `obsidian` skill for Markdown-native knowledge management
