figma-use-slides — Codex skill: what it does, how to install
This skill guides agents using Figma's use_figma MCP tool within Figma Slides. It helps create branded decks, manage slide structure, and refine layouts in place.
npx skills add openai/plugins --skill figma-use-slides -a codexWhat figma-use-slides does
The skill provides rules for running Figma Plugin API scripts in Figma Slides via use_figma. While the alternative generate_deck tool builds fixed templates in a single call, this workflow gives direct control over fonts, layouts, and speaker notes. The agent can build new decks from scratch or style them against an existing reference file.
Slides files follow rules that differ from standard Figma design files. The figma.createPage() call does not exist in Slides and throws an error immediately. Deck structure depends on SLIDE_GRID, SLIDE_ROW, and SLIDE nodes instead. Scripts must run appendChild before writing x or y coordinates. Reversing that order misplaces elements by 240 pixels. Because get_metadata fails on Slides files, the agent runs read-only scripts to verify node positions.
Use generate_deck when you just need a quick generic outline. If you need brand compliance, custom layouts, or iterative edits without deleting existing slides, install this skill.
What it helps with
- generate branded presentations in Figma Slides using reference files
- edit existing slides in place without deleting original content
- organize slide sections and rename SLIDE_ROW nodes via scripts
- prevent element offset bugs by enforcing appendChild before positioning
Example prompts for the agent
- Create a five-slide pitch deck in Figma Slides matching the typography and color tokens from our brand guide
- Update the layout and text on slide 2 without removing other slides in this deck
- Add a new Intro slide section to the current presentation using use_figma

Questions about figma-use-slides
How do I install figma-use-slides for Codex?
Run npx skills add openai/plugins --skill figma-use-slides in your terminal. When calling use_figma, add figma-use-slides to the skillNames parameter.
What is the difference between figma-use-slides and generate_deck?
The generate_deck tool builds full decks from preset templates in a single shot without supporting custom designs or follow-up changes. Using use_figma with figma-use-slides gives full layout control, brand matching, and step-by-step editing.
Why does figma.createPage() fail in Figma Slides?
Figma Slides does not support pages from standard design files. Decks rely on a slide grid structure with SLIDE_GRID, SLIDE_ROW, and SLIDE nodes instead.
