design-qa — Codex skill: compare design and code before handoff
A skill for side-by-side design and implementation comparison before handoff. Works with Figma, screenshots, and URLs; catches visual gaps in layout, typography, and interaction states.
npx skills add openai/plugins --skill design-qa -a codexWhat design-qa does
design-qa is an internal prototype QA helper. Give it a design (Figma node, image, or screenshot) and a rendered implementation (local URL, deployed site, or screenshot), and it compares them like a product reviewer — hunting for misalignments in layout, spacing, color, type, and interactive states.
Use it for Product Design prototypes, URL-to-code, and image-to-code builds. It is not for broad UX critique, design audits, or flow reviews; use the audit skill for those. The skill compares on the same viewport and state: if the source is mobile and the implementation is desktop, it flags the mismatch first, then lists prioritized fixes. If a design file cannot be opened or an implementation screenshot cannot be captured, the skill blocks handoff with a reason.
The cycle can run multiple times: after the first comparison, if P0/P1/P2 issues exist, you fix them, then the skill re-checks. Iterate until no blocking visual gaps remain.
What it helps with
- Capture and normalize design and implementation screenshots for fair comparison
- Spot visual gaps in layout, spacing, type, and color
- Prioritize fixes before handing off to development
- Re-verify results after fixes are applied
Example prompts for the agent
- Compare the Figma node to the local URL and list P0 issues
- Give me a Playwright script to capture a mobile screen without scaling
- Check whether the implementation screenshot and source design are the same size before comparison

Questions about design-qa
How do I install design-qa in Codex?
Run npx skills add openai/plugins --skill design-qa or npx skills add openai/plugins --skill design-qa -a codex. The skill opens in .agents/skills/design-qa/SKILL.md.
What does design-qa do?
It compares a design from Figma, an image, or a screenshot against a live site or app implementation, finds visual gaps, and produces a prioritized fix list before handoff.
When should I not use design-qa?
Skip it for broad UX critique, design audits, flow reviews, or general design feedback — use the audit skill instead. design-qa only works when you have both a source design and a finished implementation.
