api-gateway-patterns — Claude Code skill: Kong API gateway patterns
A skill for building API gateways on Kong: routing, rate limiting, auth, load balancing. Useful when your microservices exist but lack a single entry point.
npx skills add manutej/luxor-claude-marketplace --skill api-gateway-patterns -a claude-codeWhat api-gateway-patterns does
The skill walks through assembling a production gateway on Kong. It covers the core entities: services, routes, upstream load balancers, plugins, consumers and certificates. Then it lays out routing schemes — by path, header, HTTP method, host, and weighted targets for canary rollouts.
Configs are written in YAML. Path-based routing shows strip_path and preserve_host; header-based routing splits mobile and web traffic on User-Agent. There are also CQRS setups that separate reads from writes by method, and multi-tenant routing via hosts and subdomains.
Kong keeps its config in PostgreSQL or Cassandra, though a DB-less mode exists. Worth knowing before you start: if you don't want a database under your gateway, plan the declarative config up front. Plugins are Lua, so custom logic means touching Lua.
What it helps with
- pick a routing scheme for microservices with distinct URL prefixes
- set up a canary rollout using upstream weights
- split mobile and web traffic on the User-Agent header
- separate reads from writes by HTTP method in a CQRS setup
- describe multi-tenancy through subdomains and wildcard hosts
Example prompts for the agent
- Help me configure Kong: services users and orders, routes on /users and /orders
- Set up a canary rollout of api-v2 at 10% of traffic using upstream weights
- Split mobile and web traffic by User-Agent into two separate services
