mcp · discourse — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Connects your AI agent to Discourse forums to search discussions and read posts. Useful for browsing or managing community spaces.
claude mcp add mcp -- npx -y @discourse/mcpWhat mcp does
This integration exposes Discourse API endpoints to assistants. By default, it operates strictly in read-only mode. You can find topics and fetch raw text with discourse_read_post. Specify a forum at startup with --site <url> or pick instances dynamically using discourse_select_site.
Mutations are disabled out of the box. To create replies, pass --allow_writes with credentials configured in --auth_pairs. Any write actions follow a rate limit of roughly one request per second. Uploading local assets requires directory paths pre-approved in --allowed_upload_paths.
Node.js 24 or newer is strictly required. Older runtimes will immediately fail. The package defaults to stdio transport, but loopback HTTP is also supported on port 3000 with a 4 MiB body limit.
What it helps with
- search community topics and retrieve raw post contents
- execute pre-built Data Explorer SQL queries on the forum
- publish posts and send private messages with built-in write protection
- upload local files to forum threads from designated folders
Example prompts for the agent
- Connect to https://try.discourse.org and search for topics tagged with release
- Fetch the raw content of the post using discourse_read_post
- Run a saved Data Explorer query on the selected Discourse instance
