agent-tasks — Claude Code MCP server: what it does, how to install
Pipeline-driven task management for coding agents with stages, dependencies, and artifacts. Coordinates multi-agent workflows across a shared codebase.
claude mcp add agent-tasks -- npx -y agent-tasksWhat agent-tasks does
The server transforms flat todo lists into a directed acyclic graph of project stages, moving items from backlog to review and completion. Agents can claim assignments, attach versioned files, add threaded notes, or push tickets back when criteria fail. Dependency checks stop tasks from progressing until prerequisites pass.
Under the hood, the package provides 8 MCP tools along with a local REST interface listening on port 3422. Claude Code 2.1.289+ users get an interactive /pipeline split pane right next to the conversation.
Running it requires Node.js 20.11 or newer. Avoid setting the require_approval stage rule: no tool can confirm approvals yet, so tasks will remain stuck indefinitely.
What it helps with
- coordinate multiple AI agents working on the same repository
- prevent premature task advancement before dependencies resolve
- track versioned decision logs and architectural findings per stage
- monitor task progress directly inside the Claude Code interface
Example prompts for the agent
- Create a task for the auth migration and advance it to the spec stage
- Check next unblocked tasks matching my project context using task_list
- Attach a decision artifact explaining why we chose SQLite over Postgres

Questions about agent-tasks
How to install agent-tasks in Claude Code?
Run claude mcp add agent-tasks -- npx -y agent-tasks in your terminal. This registers all 8 tools directly into your Claude Code environment.
What does agent-tasks do?
It manages task lifecycles across defined stages, tracks blocking dependencies with cycle detection, and shares state across concurrent coding agents.
What happens if require_approval is enabled on a stage?
The pipeline will block advancement permanently. No MCP tool or REST route currently supports approval recording, so leave that gate disabled.
