BetStop registrations top 67,000 three years after Australian launch

Australia's national self-exclusion register BetStop has recorded more than 67,000 registrations three years after launch. As of 31 July, 41,290 exclusions remained active — over 60% of the total.

BetStop lets players block themselves from all licensed online and telephone bookmakers in the country through a single form. While an exclusion is active, operators cannot accept wagers from the registered individual, open new accounts for them, or send direct marketing.

78% of registrants are under 40. 38% opted for lifetime exclusion. Available terms run from three months to permanent. The system covers all licensed interactive wagering operators in Australia.

An independent audit published earlier this year found the service useful but identified gaps. Experts pointed to low awareness, poor UX and insufficient post-registration support. The regulator ACMA created the BetStop Taskforce to implement recommendations and improve support mechanisms.

For operators, this means tighter compliance: the self-exclusion base is growing, and accepting business from registered individuals carries sanction risk. A third of players are opting out for good — a signal to reassess retention and responsible gambling practice.
