Brazil prepares further curbs on online betting design

Brazil's Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA) is drafting new restrictions for licensed operators. The ordinance will ban autoplay functions, countdown timers and interface elements that may encourage compulsive wagering.

Platforms will be prohibited from accepting bets without a separate customer action. Timers and other tools pushing rapid decisions will also be banned. Operators will not be allowed to pre-fill deposit or stake fields or suggest specific amounts. Coin sound effects and audiovisual signals that encourage continued play will be prohibited.

The regulator is considering mandatory pauses between bets or minimum bet durations, though the final text has not been published. The government also plans to ban leaderboards of large wins and content — tutorials, statistics, tips — that creates the illusion that outcomes depend on the player's knowledge or skill.

Separate requirements will cover withdrawals: operators will be barred from complicating the process or using promotions to retain funds in betting accounts. The measures are part of SPA's priorities for 2026–27. The regulator has identified monitoring risky bettor profiles and strengthening preventive measures as key tasks. Plans include a unified system allowing customers to track their own gambling behaviour through integration with SPA.

Industry association ABRAJOGO discussed the expected rules on 7 August and said it would prepare a formal position for the regulator.
