GEO traffic is largely invisible in web analytics, study finds

Companies have been treating GEO and AEO as traffic channels. The clicks out of AI answers are few, and most of them never show up as a separate source in analytics.

Why AI clicks hide inside search traffic

Inside Yandex and Google, visits from AI answers are logged as ordinary search traffic. Standard reports do not separate them from the classic results page. That gap matters: the bulk of all interaction with AI answers happens in search. A user asks a question, gets a summary, clicks a source, and the system records a search visit.

So an attempt to size the whole AI channel from web analytics numbers fails by design. Part of the channel carries no label.

What can actually be measured

The observable part of GEO comes down to two things. First, whether a site lands in the sources behind an answer — a citation is a result even with no click. Second, clicks on links in the answer itself and in the source list: they flow into search traffic, but they physically exist.

Anyone building a GEO report should work from those two indicators rather than from a single 'traffic from ChatGPT' line.

What it means for channel planning

Teams expecting a stream of visits from GEO are quickly disappointed. The traffic is thin. That is no reason to shut the channel down. Landing in the sources of an answer buys visibility in front of an audience that has already phrased a query. The click may not come at once, and the usual metrics will not capture the effect.

The practical call: do not fold GEO into performance channels in one funnel. It has its own mechanics and needs its own measurement.

To test whether GEO works in a niche, start by finding which queries the AI engines answer at all, then track whether the site appears among the sources. That is manual work, but honest. Automation still gives an incomplete picture because much of the interaction stays inside search. Track clicks out of answers separately — the link is still traceable when you look at sources.

GEO is not a channel with predictable ROI in the usual sense. Visibility in AI answers is worth watching where audiences ask concrete questions and get a summary instead of ten blue links. A place in the source list is already a result. The click is a bonus.
