A proposed increase in Machine Games Duty to 40% threatens to force casino closures across Britain and put 3,800 jobs at risk. Regional venues outside London face the sharpest impact.
According to the Betting and Gaming Council, half of potential closures would hit northern England and Scotland (around 1,900 jobs at risk), with another 20% in the Midlands. London accounts for just 10% of venues under threat. Operators are considering shutting down up to a third of their sites.
Britain's casinos directly employ over 10,000 people and support a further 3,700 jobs. The sector records 14 million visits annually, contributes £515 million in tax, and generates £815 million for the economy. The industry warns that £50 million in planned investment could be cancelled or cut if the duty rises.
BGC chief executive Grainne Hurst called the situation an existential threat. 'We are talking about thousands of people who will lose their livelihoods and venues that have served their towns for decades. These are good jobs for young people, flexible hours, career opportunities,' she said. Hurst noted that many former casino buildings stand empty with no new business moving in. 'You cannot collect tax from a closed casino. The Chancellor should not gamble with thousands of British jobs and the future of an entire industry.'
