Indonesia’s 4.1m tally shifts focus to gambling platforms

Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs reported blocking 4.1 million gambling-related items, including 3.6 million sites and IP addresses. Minister Meutya Hafid said authorities are moving beyond simple blocking to demanding that platforms improve their own detection and removal systems for gambling promotions, particularly in interactive zones such as comment sections where affiliate offers appear even when the platform itself does not host casino content.

The difficulty is that most blocked IPs sit outside the country. Indonesian authorities can cut access but cannot shut down the infrastructure directly. That has shifted the focus to platforms: officials want automatic detection and quick takedowns of promotional material that arrives not through a separate domain but through user-generated content.

No specific standards, deadlines or penalties have been set. The ministry has not clarified what level of monitoring is expected from each type of provider or how fast removal should happen. This is a signal of heightened scrutiny rather than a new regulation. The 4.1 million figure reflects the volume of official enforcement work, not how much content remains accessible or how much platforms removed on their own.

For operators and platforms working with Indonesian traffic, the message is clear: authorities no longer rely solely on blocklists. Distribution through comments, shares and other user tools is now under watch. The campaign continues and the scale is growing, but there is no clear roadmap for compliance yet.
