New South Wales regulator has extended the licence suspension of The Star's Sydney casino until 30 June 2027. The Independent Casino Commission (NICC) decision keeps the property under external management by Nick Weeks for another two years.
The commission cited unresolved concerns with corporate governance, leadership and company culture despite progress in the remediation programme. NICC chair Philip Crawford said The Star has come a long way since the suspension took effect in October 2022, but group-level issues continue to affect all properties.
AUSTRAC has filed a case in federal court, and two former executives have already been found guilty of breaching the Corporations Act 2001 over failures in anti-money laundering controls. The regulator also flagged uncertainty around key management appointments and ongoing litigation.
The suspension can be lifted at any point if the casino demonstrates that remediation measures are embedded and sustainable. The Star lost independent operating rights following the Bell inquiry and was fined $100 million. In 2025, NICC fined The Star Sydney and Crown Sydney a combined $2.25 million after a 16-year-old entered gaming floors multiple times using fake identification.
