Google’s top ranking factors, according to 131 SEO professionals

Search intent now ranks first among factors SEO professionals associate with Google positioning. Backlinks retain influence but no longer close the question of page quality on their own. Original research stands out separately: practitioners rate its contribution to ranking higher than that of scaled AI content.

These findings come from 131 SEO professionals. This is not the algorithm formula or an official signal list from Google. It is a professional assessment of what today correlates with page growth in search.

Intent above formal match

A page may contain the right keywords and still fail to answer the user's task. The query 'best CPA networks for iGaming' implies one type of material, while 'how to set up postback in a tracker' requires another. In the first case the reader needs a selection with comparison criteria. In the second, a step-by-step instruction with parameter examples and event verification is likely useful.

So work on SEO material should not start with keyword density. First, understand what result the person wants after the click.

Check which formats already appear in the SERP for the query, at what funnel stage the user stands, whether they need an answer, comparison, instruction or commercial offer, what questions arise before and after the main action, and whether the page title matches the content the audience expects.

Intent shapes text structure. If someone searches for offer comparison, a long introduction about the market pushes the needed information down. If they search for instruction, a list of general advice without a sequence of steps leaves the task unsolved.

How to verify page-query fit

Open several pages from the search results and list recurring elements. These may be tables, definitions, instructions, calculations, screenshots or FAQ answers. Their presence does not mean you should copy them. The task is to understand user expectations.

Then compare them with your page on four points. Answer at the start: the reader should quickly see what the material is about and what problem it solves. Logic of disclosure: basic information first, then details and limitations. Evidence: figures, methodology, examples and links to primary sources strengthen trust in conclusions. Next step: after reading it is clear what to do next — check settings, compare options or apply the instruction.

If the page answers a different question, refining meta tags will not fix it. Change the content and its delivery first. Only after that check CTR, depth of view and conversions.

Links remain part of quality assessment

Backlinks have not disappeared from SEO practice. They still figure among factors practitioners associate with ranking. At the same time, link count alone does not sufficiently explain page growth.

For B2B and affiliate projects it matters more to look at placement context. A link from a topical resource where the material genuinely relates to your page looks more meaningful than a random mention in text unrelated to the topic. The user should understand why to follow the link and what they will find after the click.

Before attracting links, check whether the platform topic matches your page, whether the publication has independent value, whether the link leads to material that confirms or develops the thesis, whether the placement looks artificial, and whether the transition can deliver target traffic rather than just a formal signal.

A link strategy without a strong landing page creates a weak connection. The user arrives by recommendation but gets no answer. In that case it is hard to tie placement costs to ROI, even if the number of donor domains grows.

Why original research stands out from template content

SEO professionals note original research separately. Its perceived contribution to ranking is rated higher than that of content created by scaling through AI.

The reason is practical: proprietary data provides material that does not exist on dozens of similar pages. This may be creative test results, conversion comparison by GEO, ad format analysis, offer statistics or a breakdown of tracking errors. Value arises from the methodology and observations themselves, not from text volume.

Research should have a clear basis: what exactly was measured, on what data set conclusions are built, over what period information was collected, what limitations the sample has, and how the reader can interpret the result.

Do not turn research into a set of loud claims. A table without methodology explanation helps little. A chart without initial conditions may create a false impression of precision. Better to show fewer metrics but explain their origin and connection to a practical task.

Where AI content loses value

Large-scale text generation does not by itself solve the ranking task. A large volume of pages assembled by one scheme often leads to repetition of the same thoughts. As a result the material answers the query formally but adds no new information.

AI can be used as a working tool for draft structure, question grouping and topic completeness check. The final material requires editorial review, facts and firsthand experience. This is especially visible in SEO, arbitrage and ad tech, where details change quickly and general advice without context is of little use.

Before publishing, ask the text several questions: is there data here not found in a standard collection, are real conditions and limitations given, can the reader repeat the described process, are figures and statements confirmed, and have paragraphs that only increase volume been removed.

If the answers are negative, scaling will not fix the problem. First add observations, examples or analysis, then release the material in the needed volume.

Practical model for the SEO team

The three directions combine into one working sequence. First the team fixes intent and formulates the page task. Then the editor gathers evidence: proprietary data, examples, expert comments and appropriate external links. After that the SEO specialist checks structure, internal linking, snippet and query fit.

This order helps avoid substituting content with external signals. Links support the page but do not explain on behalf of the user. AI speeds preparation but does not automatically create useful research. A good landing page starts with a precise answer to the query and is backed by material that has something to say.

For control you can keep a short table checking whether the page solves the user's task, whether there are firsthand observations or calculations, whether links confirm content and lead to relevant material, whether the text passed manual fact and usefulness review, and whether CTR, positions and conversions change after the update.

Google positions depend on many conditions, but the assessments given set a useful priority order. First hit the intent. Then provide original value and confirm it. Links and generation tools work in this system as support, not as a substitute for content.
