What worktrunk does

Worktrunk is a command-line tool for git worktrees, and this skill hands the agent its documentation. The bundled reference/ files cover configuration, hooks, the switch, merge and list commands, LLM commit messages, aliases and troubleshooting. The agent pulls them in when it needs to know which worktree a wt command will act on, or when it edits .config/wt.toml and ~/.config/worktrunk/config.toml.

One rule the skill keeps coming back to: a branch argument already names its worktree, while the global -C <path> moves the working directory instead of picking a worktree. Combining the two names the same worktree twice. The configs differ in how carefully you should touch them. User config in ~/.config/worktrunk/config.toml never lands in git, so the skill suggests proposing a change and getting consent first. Project config at <repo>/.config/wt.toml is versioned, which makes edits there easier to undo.

The skill needs the wt CLI installed, otherwise the example commands go nowhere. Project hooks also do not fire on their own in non-interactive sessions — Worktrunk waits for the user to approve them, so do not count on an unattended run.

What it helps with

  • figure out which worktree a wt command targets
  • write a hook for a worktree lifecycle event
  • set up LLM commit message generation
  • keep user and project configs separate by permission
  • build an alias or multi-step wt pipeline

Example prompts for the agent

  • Explain which worktree wt switch beta will pick when I run it from another one
  • Add a pre-start hook to .config/wt.toml that runs npm install
  • Set up commit message generation in my worktrunk user config
