What video-to-gif does

The skill runs a video file through a sweep of parameters: frame rate, width, colour count. You get a <input>_gifs/ directory with the variants plus a sorted table listing file size, FPS, width and colours. No guessing about settings — the comparison is right there.

The default full preset produces 18 variants: 3 FPS values (10, 15, 20), 3 widths (480, 640, 800) and 2 colour counts (128, 256). Other presets are minimal, lossy and quality. Trim the clip with --start and --end, or override the sweep yourself with --fps, --width, --colors, --lossy.

FFmpeg and uv have to be installed first, otherwise the script will not run. gifsicle matters only for lossy variants — skip it and the lossy preset has nothing to work with. Widths above the source resolution get skipped automatically. The palette is built in two passes, which beats a single-pass build on quality. Trim long clips up front, because a GIF past 10 seconds gets heavy. For screen recordings, a sensible starting point is 640px, 15fps, 256 colours.

What it helps with

  • turn a clip into a GIF without hand-tuning parameters
  • compare file size against quality across several variants
  • cut a specific time range out of a video
  • get a small GIF for a chat message or docs page
  • spot colour banding when the palette is too small

Example prompts for the agent

  • make a GIF from demo.mp4, just the first 10 seconds
  • run demo.mp4 with the minimal preset, I want a quick comparison
  • generate variants from demo.mp4 with fps 12 and 15 and width 480 and 800
