vercel-optimize — Claude Code skill: Vercel cost audit
A skill that audits Vercel spend and speed: it gathers usage and route metrics first, then recommends code and config changes.
npx skills add vercel-labs/agent-skills --skill vercel-optimize -a claude-codeWhat vercel-optimize does
vercel-optimize audits from observability inward. scripts/collect-signals.mjs pulls metrics, usage and contract for the linked project on a shared 14-day window, scripts/scan-codebase.mjs reads the repo, scripts/merge-signals.mjs writes signals.json. Then scripts/gate-investigations.mjs picks the routes and files worth a look. Source files open only along the import chain of a candidate.
Reference files ship with it: references/docs-library.json for citations, references/voice.md for report wording. A citation that does not match your Vercel or framework version gets dropped.
Setup needs Vercel CLI v53+ with vercel metrics, vercel usage and vercel contract, a vercel login session, a directory linked by vercel link, and Node.js 20+. Route-level advice needs Observability Plus. Never paste auth tokens into shell commands.
Next.js is the strongest target, with route mapping and playbooks for App Router and Pages Router. SvelteKit and Nuxt are supported, Astro partly. Hono, Remix and unknown frameworks are blocked by default, so the skill stops and asks whether a limited audit is fine. Without Observability Plus you get no file-level route recommendations.
What it helps with
- see what drives the Vercel bill from usage and contract data
- find routes that cost the most in Function Invocations and Fast Data Transfer
- check where caching takes load off functions
- break down Build Minutes for the project
- look at Core Web Vitals and bot traffic before touching code
Example prompts for the agent
- Pull the Vercel metrics and show me why this project's bill went up.
- Which routes are the most expensive, and what should I change in them?
- Find caching candidates from Fast Data Transfer.
