ucp — Claude Code skill for Universal Commerce Protocol
Walks a Next.js project through UCP adoption: qualifying questions, config, scaffolding, discovery profile, tests and schema validation.
npx skills add vercel-labs/agentic-commerce-skills --skill ucp -a claude-codeWhat ucp does
The ucp skill gives your agent a set of sub-commands for implementing the Universal Commerce Protocol. Run it bare and you get the list: init, consult, plan, gaps, scaffold, validate, profile, test, docs. The usual path runs from init through consult, plan, scaffold, profile, test and validate.
The spec itself is not bundled. On init the skill looks for a local copy in ./ucp/, otherwise pulls ./.ucp-spec/ with git pull, and if neither exists it clones the UCP repository and appends the path to .gitignore. Every decision lands in ucp.config.json at the project root: roles, runtime, enabled transports (rest, mcp, a2a, embedded), payment handlers, flags such as AP2 mandates and identity linking, and the domain for /.well-known/ucp.
Edge runtime is out — Node.js only, with Bun as an opt-in experimental option. If ucp.config.json already exists, the skill asks whether to overwrite, merge or abort. Gap detection leans on AST parsing and data flow tracing, so on a codebase with unusual routing it is worth running gaps first and reading what it flags before scaffolding anything.
What it helps with
- break UCP adoption into steps you can actually finish
- spot the parts of an existing codebase that fall short of the spec
- generate a working checkout handler scaffold
- produce the discovery profile for
/.well-known/ucp - check an implementation against UCP schemas before release
Example prompts for the agent
- /ucp init
- /ucp consult
- /ucp gaps

Questions about ucp
How do I install ucp in Claude?
Run npx skills add vercel-labs/agentic-commerce-skills --skill ucp -a claude-code. The skill lands in ~/.claude/skills/ucp/SKILL.md.
What does the ucp skill do?
It guides UCP implementation in a Next.js project: consultation, plan, scaffold generation, discovery profile, tests and schema validation. Decisions persist in ucp.config.json.
Does ucp work on the Edge runtime?
No, Edge is not supported. Node.js is the main option, with Bun available as an opt-in experimental runtime.
