steel-browser — Claude Code skill: what it does, how to install
This skill runs a real Steel cloud browser for live web tasks such as JavaScript pages, forms, screenshots, PDFs, and login flows.
npx skills add steel-dev/skills --skill steel-browser -a claude-codeWhat steel-browser does
steel-browser gives an agent a Steel cloud browser through the CLI. It can open pages, click controls, enter data, collect content, capture screenshots, and create PDFs. Use steel scrape <url> for a simple page, steel screenshot <url> for an image, or steel pdf <url> for a PDF.
Login flows, forms, and other multi-step work use a steel browser session. The agent starts a session, navigates to the page, takes an interactive snapshot -i, acts on refs such as @e1, and captures a fresh snapshot after DOM changes. The CLI must be authenticated with steel login; otherwise the cloud browser cannot start. This skill is for operating the browser, not for writing reusable Steel SDK or API code.
What it helps with
- open a JavaScript-rendered page
- complete a form or login flow
- capture a webpage screenshot
- extract data from a live site
- save a page as PDF
Example prompts for the agent
- Open this JavaScript-rendered page, complete the required steps, and extract the resulting data.
- Use the Steel browser to sign in, fill out the form, and capture the final page.
- Create a PDF from this page with
steel pdf <url>, then verify it withsteel scrape https://example.com.

Escalate from scrape/screenshot/PDF to an interactive browser session only when interaction or state is required. ## Interactive Session Workflow ```bash steel browser start --session my-task --session-timeout 3600000 steel browser navigate https://example.com --session my-task steel browser snapshot -i --session my-task steel browser click @e1 --session my-task steel browser wait --load networkidle --session my-task steel browser snapshot -i --session my-task steel browser stop --session my-task ``` Rules: - Always use the same `--session <name>` on every command. - Take a fresh `snapshot -i` after navigation or DOM changes because element refs expire. - Prefer `@eN` refs from snapshots over brittle CSS selectors. - Use `steel browser batch` when a sequence needs an action and immediate re-snapshot. - Release/stop sessions unless the user explicitly asks to keep them open. ## Troubleshooting 1. Run `steel skills doctor` for install or CLI-skill mismatch issues. 2. Run `steel doctor --preflight` for auth/API issues. 3. Use `steel browser sessions` and `steel browser live --session <name>` for active sessions. 4. For failed completed sessions, load `steel-session-debugging`. 5. For bot/proxy/CAPTCHA/identity fixes, load `steel-reliability`. ## References - `references/steel-browser-commands.md`: command reference. - `references/steel-browser-lifecycle.md`: session lifecycle discipline. - `references/troubleshooting.md`: recovery playbooks. - `references/migration-agent-browser.md`: migration from upstream `agent-browser`.
