kpi-dashboard-design · secondsky — Claude Code skill: KPI dashboards
A skill that guides the agent through KPI dashboard design: metric choice, layout, chart types and status colors. Useful when you build analytics views for leadership.
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill kpi-dashboard-design -a claude-codeWhat kpi-dashboard-design does
The skill hands your agent a set of rules for designing KPI dashboards. Inside is a selection framework — relevance to business goals, measurability, team influence, update frequency, plain readability — plus a table of common KPIs grouped by goal: revenue, acquisition, retention, efficiency, quality. There is also a layout sketch with an executive summary strip on top and a 2×2 grid of panels below it.
For the visual side the skill sets hierarchy rules and traffic-light CSS classes: green #22c55e, amber #f59e0b, red #ef4444. A separate table maps data to chart type — line for trends, bars for comparison, donut for composition, histogram for distribution, scatter for correlation, funnel for stages. Interactivity gets its own list: drill-down, date range, segment filters, CSV and PDF export, scheduled email reports.
The skill states its own limits. It advises keeping 5–7 KPIs per dashboard, showing trends instead of snapshots, including a comparison period, and reviewing relevance quarterly. Common mistakes it names: too many metrics, no visual hierarchy, stale data, metrics nobody owns. If your screen already has twenty tiles and no owner column, that is worth a second look before you ship it.
What it helps with
- pick metrics that map to business goals
- arrange dashboard tiles by visual hierarchy
- match chart type to the shape of the data
- add period-over-period comparison instead of bare numbers
- cut KPIs that overload the screen
Example prompts for the agent
- Build an executive dashboard with revenue, acquisition and retention, trends over six months
- Pick chart types for these metrics and suggest a screen layout
- Review my dashboard for the usual mistakes: too many metrics, no comparisons

# KPI Dashboard Design
Design effective dashboards that communicate key metrics clearly.
## KPI Selection Framework
**Good KPIs are:**
- Relevant to business goals
- Measurable and quantifiable
- Influenced by the team
- Updated frequently
- Simple to understand
## Common Business KPIs
| Goal | KPIs |
|------|------|
| Revenue | MRR, ARR, Revenue Growth |
| Acquisition | CAC, New Users, Conversion Rate |
| Retention | Churn Rate, NPS, DAU/MAU |
| Efficiency | LTV:CAC, Burn Rate |
| Quality | Error Rate, Response Time |
## Dashboard Layout
```
┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Executive Summary │
│ [Revenue ▲12%] [Users ▲8%] [Churn ▼2%] │
├─────────────────────┬───────────────────────────┤
│ │ │
│ Revenue Trend │ User Acquisition │
│ (Line Chart) │ (Bar Chart) │
│ │ │
├─────────────────────┼───────────────────────────┤
│ │ │
│ Retention Funnel │ Top Products │
│ (Funnel Chart) │ (Table) │
│ │ │
└─────────────────────┴───────────────────────────┘
```
## Visual Design Principles
```css
/* Traffic light colors for status */
.metric-good { color: #22c55e; } /* Green */
.metric-warning { color: #f59e0b; } /* Amber */
.metric-bad { color: #ef4444; } /* Red */
/* Visual hierarchy */
.metric-primary {
font-size: 2.5rem;
font-weight: 700;
}
.metric-secondary {
font-size: 1.5rem;
font-weight: 500;
}
```
## Chart Selection
| Data Type | Chart |
|-----------|-------|
| Trend over time | Line chart |
| Comparison | Bar chart |
| Composition | Pie/Donut |
| Distribution | Histogram |
| Correlation | Scatter plot |
| Funnel stages | Funnel chart |
## Interactivity Features
- Drill-down to detailed views
- Date range selection
- Filtering by segment
- Export to CSV/PDF
- Scheduled email reports
## Best Practices
- Limit to 5-7 KPIs per dashboard
- Show trends, not just snapshots
- Use consistent color coding
- Include comparison periods (vs last month)
- Update data in real-time or hourly
- Review dashboard relevance quarterly
## Common Mistakes
- Too many metrics (information overload)
- No clear visual hierarchy
- Missing context (no comparisons)
- Outdated or stale data
- Metrics without ownership
