design-system-creation · secondsky — Claude Code skill: build a design system
A skill that walks the agent through building a design system: tokens, typography, components and their docs. Useful when UI standards need to be settled before code.
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill design-system-creation -a claude-codeWhat design-system-creation does
The skill splits a design system into three layers: foundation (colors, typography, spacing, elevation), components (buttons, inputs, cards, navigation) and patterns (forms, layouts, empty states). The agent follows that order, so tokens come out before components do.
The foundation is written as CSS variables in :root: a color scale from --color-primary-50 to --color-primary-900, semantic --color-success, --color-warning, --color-error, the --font-sans and --font-mono stacks, text sizes from --text-xs to --text-2xl, spacing on a 4px base and three shadow levels. Every component gets documented by anatomy, variants, states and accessibility, and the React button example carries variant, size, loading and aria-busy props.
Governance is its own section: a review committee approves new components, contributions move through RFC → review → implementation, releases follow semantic versioning, and deprecation means a 3-month notice plus a migration guide. If your project already has a token set, the skill will happily propose a second scale on top of it, so decide which one stays canonical first.
What it helps with
- lock colors, fonts and spacing into tokens before layout work starts
- build a button, input and card library that behaves the same everywhere
- document a component's variants and states for the next developer
- ship dark mode and semantic colors from the first commit
- move a new component through review and versioning
Example prompts for the agent
- build a design system for a new project: tokens, typography, spacing and shadows
- document the Button component: anatomy, variants, states, accessibility
- add semantic colors and dark mode support to the design system

Questions about design-system-creation
How do I install design-system-creation in Claude?
Run npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill design-system-creation -a claude-code. The skill file then lives at ~/.claude/skills/design-system-creation/SKILL.md.
What does design-system-creation do?
It guides the agent through building a design system: foundation tokens, documented components and screen patterns. It also sets rules for review, versioning and deprecation.
What accessibility requirements does the skill cover?
Component docs include an Accessibility block with role, keyboard handling and a visible focus ring, and the best practices call for WCAG 2.1 AA compliance.

# Design System Creation
Build comprehensive design systems for consistent UI development across teams.
## Design System Layers
1. **Foundation**: Colors, typography, spacing, elevation
2. **Components**: Buttons, inputs, cards, navigation
3. **Patterns**: Forms, layouts, empty states
## Foundation - Design Tokens
```css
:root {
/* Colors */
--color-primary-50: #eff6ff;
--color-primary-500: #3b82f6;
--color-primary-900: #1e3a8a;
/* Semantic colors */
--color-success: #22c55e;
--color-warning: #f59e0b;
--color-error: #ef4444;
/* Typography */
--font-sans: 'Inter', system-ui, sans-serif;
--font-mono: 'Fira Code', monospace;
/* Type scale */
--text-xs: 0.75rem;
--text-sm: 0.875rem;
--text-base: 1rem;
--text-lg: 1.125rem;
--text-xl: 1.25rem;
--text-2xl: 1.5rem;
/* Spacing (4px base) */
--space-1: 0.25rem;
--space-2: 0.5rem;
--space-4: 1rem;
--space-8: 2rem;
/* Elevation */
--shadow-sm: 0 1px 2px rgba(0,0,0,0.05);
--shadow-md: 0 4px 6px rgba(0,0,0,0.1);
--shadow-lg: 0 10px 15px rgba(0,0,0,0.1);
}
```
## Component Documentation
```markdown
## Button
### Anatomy
- Container (padding, background)
- Label (text)
- Icon (optional)
### Variants
- Primary: Main actions
- Secondary: Alternative actions
- Ghost: Subtle actions
### States
- Default, Hover, Active, Disabled, Loading
### Accessibility
- Role: button
- Keyboard: Enter/Space to activate
- Focus: Visible focus ring
```
## Component Example (React)
```tsx
interface ButtonProps {
variant?: 'primary' | 'secondary' | 'ghost';
size?: 'sm' | 'md' | 'lg';
loading?: boolean;
disabled?: boolean;
children: React.ReactNode;
}
function Button({ variant = 'primary', size = 'md', loading, disabled, children }: ButtonProps) {
return (
<button
className={`btn btn-${variant} btn-${size}`}
disabled={disabled || loading}
aria-busy={loading}
>
{loading ? <Spinner /> : children}
</button>
);
}
```
## Governance
- **Review Committee**: Approves new components
- **Contribution Process**: RFC → Review → Implementation
- **Versioning**: Semantic versioning for releases
- **Deprecation**: 3-month notice with migration guide
## Best Practices
- Start with foundational tokens
- Document every component thoroughly
- Ensure WCAG 2.1 AA compliance
- Support dark mode from the start
- Include usage guidelines with do/don't examples
