research-slide-design — Claude Code skill for research slides
This skill shapes technical talks and posters around clear visual claims and a logical slide sequence. Use it for seminars, conference talks, or defenses.
npx skills add hanhuark/mechanical-engineering-research-skill --skill research-slide-design -a claude-codeWhat research-slide-design does
The skill guides each slide around one claim, question, or transition. It favors figures and diagrams over explanatory paragraphs, while speaker notes add interpretation and explain how the next slide follows. Text stays on screen when it carries a takeaway, a qualifier, a key number, or labels needed to read a figure.
Before outlining, editing slides, writing notes, making a poster, or planning animation, read references/presentation-slides.md. Source figures need a readability check at presentation size. Keep axes, units, uncertainty, and conditions that affect how the data should be understood. Cropping those details can change the claim a figure supports.
The final review happens in presentation mode: check fit, legibility from a distance, overlap, and whether motion clarifies the point. For publication schematics, facilities, workflows, and system diagrams, the skill points to research-schematic-design for editable geometry and verification of labels and arrows.
What it helps with
- map a technical talk into a logical slide sequence
- replace dense explanations with figures and diagrams
- write speaker notes that add context instead of repeating slide text
- check figure legibility and animation in presentation mode
Example prompts for the agent
- Plan a technical research talk, with one clear claim for each slide.
- Review these slides for unreadable figures, overlapping objects, and text that does not fit.
- Write speaker notes that explain the evidence and connect each slide to the next.

--- name: research-slide-design description: Design clean, graphics-first technical presentations and posters with logical slide progression, visual hierarchy, purposeful motion, and complementary speaker notes. Use for research talks, conference slides, seminars, defenses, posters, or figure-focused presentations. --- # Research Slide Design ## Purpose Make technical presentations easy to follow and visually calm. A listener should be able to anticipate the reason for slide N+1 from slide N, while the presenter supplies the interpretation that the slide does not repeat. ## Route To Reference Read `references/presentation-slides.md` before building an outline, editing slides, creating speaker notes, designing a poster, or planning animations and videos. ## Design Rules - Establish one claim, question, or transition per slide; use section transitions when the logic changes. - Treat every visual group as having its own rectangle of space. Maintain clear separation between title, figure, annotation, legend, takeaway, and navigation elements. - Prefer figures, diagrams, sequences, video, and purposeful animation over paragraphs. Keep only information that cannot be conveyed clearly by the visual. - Use display text for the take-home message, a necessary qualifier, a key number, or labels required to decode the figure. - Speaker notes should explain the slide's evidence and transition, not recite its visible text. ## Research Figure Handling Use source figures only after checking readability at presentation size. Simplify legends, emphasize the comparison relevant to the claim, and label data provenance. Do not crop away axes, units, uncertainty, or conditions that affect interpretation. For a publication schematic, graphical abstract, facility, workflow, or system diagram, use `research-schematic-design` to preserve editable geometry and verify the physical meaning of every label and arrow. ## Final Check Review the slide sequence in presentation mode. Check that text fits, graphics are legible at distance, no objects overlap, animations clarify rather than distract, and a viewer can recover the narrative from slide titles and visual claims alone.
