What research-data-analysis does

The skill fixes an order for research work. You state a mechanism and a prediction that could fail, then build a detailed baseline case with diagnostics, data reduction and error estimates. Contrast cases come next, chosen to isolate one mechanism at a time. Decision criteria are written down before outcomes are inspected, because otherwise it is easy to fit the story to the numbers.

Three reference files carry the details: references/technical-writing-analysis.md on analysis structure and figure discussion, references/research-coding.md on reproducible code and pipelines, references/ai-tools-thermal-fluids.md on AI help for thermal-fluid work. Another section asks you to keep raw-data provenance, units, calibration steps, scripts and versioned outputs. With ML, the guidance is to split by experimental condition or specimen when neighbouring observations are correlated.

The author is blunt about one habit: do not add parameter levels just because CPU time is available. A broad sweep pays off when exploration, optimisation or a surrogate model is the actual goal. So the skill suits people who will commit to falsifiable claims up front. Anyone who wants a tidy report after the fact gets less out of it.

What it helps with

  • Write a falsifiable prediction before running a test series
  • Build a baseline case with diagnostics and uncertainty estimates
  • Pick contrast cases that isolate a single mechanism
  • Keep raw data, scripts and outputs traceable across versions
  • Split ML data by experimental condition or specimen

Example prompts for the agent

  • Lay out an experiment plan to test whether surface roughness changes heat transfer
  • Define the baseline case for my CFD run and list the uncertainty sources
  • Review this plot from my lab data for implied precision

Questions about research-data-analysis

How do I install research-data-analysis in Claude Code?

Run npx skills add hanhuark/mechanical-engineering-research-skill --skill research-data-analysis -a claude-code. The skill lands in ~/.claude/skills/research-data-analysis/SKILL.md.

What does research-data-analysis do?

It gives the agent a method for experiment and simulation design: a baseline case, a hypothesis with a pass/fail rule, traceable processing and plots that state uncertainty.

Which platforms support this skill?

Installers exist for Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode, each writing the skill into that tool's own directory.

# Research Data Analysis

## Purpose

Produce understanding, not an exhaustive parameter sweep. Use a detailed baseline case to demonstrate the measurement/model chain, then choose experiments or simulations that can prove or disprove a stated hypothesis.

## Route To References

- For baseline-first DOE, figure discussion, and technical analysis structure, read `references/technical-writing-analysis.md`.
- For reproducible research code and data pipelines, read `references/research-coding.md`.
- For AI/ML-assisted thermal-fluid analysis, read `references/ai-tools-thermal-fluids.md`.

## Hypothesis-Driven DOE

1. State the mechanism and the falsifiable prediction.
2. Define a baseline with detailed diagnostics, data reduction, uncertainty, and expected limits.
3. Select contrast cases that isolate mechanisms, including controls or negative cases when informative.
4. Define response variables, sampling, replication, exclusions, and statistical/physical decision criteria before inspecting outcomes.
5. Report what each possible outcome would mean. A useful DOE advances understanding whether the hypothesis is supported or rejected.

Do not multiply arbitrary levels of independent parameters simply because computation or test time is available. Use broad sweeps only when exploration, optimization, surrogate construction, or response-surface estimation is itself justified.

## Data And Plots

Preserve raw-data provenance, units, calibration and preprocessing steps, scripts/environment, deterministic inputs, and versioned outputs. Build plots around comparisons that test the hypothesis. Show uncertainty, sample size or repeat count where relevant, and avoid visually implying precision beyond the measurement or model.

For ML, split data by experimental condition, video, specimen, or run when adjacent observations are correlated; distinguish predictive performance from physical validation and domain-transfer performance.
