recovering-from-errors — Claude Code skill: fix Watch Skill failures
This skill reads a Watch Skill error code, runs watch-skill doctor, applies the stated fix and retries the failed command once.
npx skills add oxbshw/watch-skill --skill recovering-from-errors -a claude-codeWhat recovering-from-errors does
The skill kicks in when a Watch Skill command fails, a video download breaks, ffmpeg or yt-dlp is missing, a provider returns an error, or local vision stops. It works from evidence: run watch-skill doctor --json, read the failing checks, apply only their fixes.
doctor repairs managed ffmpeg and yt-dlp binaries, stale locks, corrupt caches, missing frame directories and known local-model health failures. After remediation the skill re-runs doctor once, then repeats the original operation exactly once. If another structured error comes back, it reports the code, message and fix instead of looping.
Security and cost policy hold during recovery. The skill will not upload the video file, switch on a paid provider or raise the cost ceiling just to make an error disappear. Provider auth needs the matching WATCHSKILL_*_API_KEY set locally; low memory means reducing the local model or context, or picking a cloud provider you already have.
What it helps with
- read a Watch Skill error code and apply its stated fix
- repair managed
ffmpegandyt-dlpbinaries without a manual rebuild - clear a stale lock and rebuild a corrupt cache
- diagnose a dead local vision model and fall back to a cloud provider
- find the real video ID instead of an unknown one
Example prompts for the agent
- the watch command failed on download, figure out why
- local vision stopped working, repair my setup
- why can't it watch this video

Questions about recovering-from-errors
How do I install recovering-from-errors in Claude?
Run npx skills add oxbshw/watch-skill --skill recovering-from-errors -a claude-code. The skill lands at ~/.claude/skills/recovering-from-errors/SKILL.md.
What does recovering-from-errors do?
It diagnoses a Watch Skill failure with watch-skill doctor --json, applies the fixes named in the failing checks and retries the original command once. If the error returns, it reports the code, message and fix.
What do I need for a provider authentication error?
Verify the matching WATCHSKILL_*_API_KEY locally. If the provider model is not found, run watch-skill setup-vision with a valid vision model.

--- name: recovering-from-errors version: "1.4.3" description: A Watch Skill command failed, video download broke, ffmpeg or yt-dlp is missing, a provider returned an error, local vision stopped, or the user asks "why can't it watch this" or "repair my setup". Use this to diagnose and apply the engine's structured fix before retrying the original operation. license: MIT user-invocable: true allowed-tools: Bash, Read --- # Recovering from errors Failures use stable error codes and include an actionable `fix`. Preserve that evidence; do not replace it with a generic explanation. ## Diagnose first ```bash watch-skill doctor --json ``` Read the failing checks and apply only their stated fixes. `doctor` can repair managed ffmpeg and yt-dlp binaries, stale locks, corrupt caches, missing frame directories, and known local-model health failures. Re-run it once after remediation. ## Retry the original operation once After doctor is green, repeat the command that failed. If it returns another structured error, report its code, message, and fix. Do not loop indefinitely, silently switch cloud providers, enable cloud STT, or reprocess an already indexed video. Common routes: - acquisition or extractor failure: `watch-skill doctor --json`, then retry the watch; - provider authentication: verify the matching `WATCHSKILL_*_API_KEY` locally; - provider model not found: run `watch-skill setup-vision` with a valid vision model; - low memory or local server failure: reduce the local model/context or select a cloud provider the user already has; - unknown video ID: `watch-skill list`, then use the listed ID or original source. Security and cost policy are invariants during recovery. Never upload the video file, enable a paid provider, or raise the cost ceiling merely to make an error disappear.
