What nodejs-express-server does

The skill gives the agent a working frame for Express.js: how to lay out routes, chain middleware, handle errors, and wire up a database. It ships a short server example with express.json(), a /health endpoint, and an error handler, plus a practice list — validate input before processing, use async/await, keep route handlers small, keep secrets out of code.

Most of the content lives in the references/ directory: separate files for basic Express setup, middleware chains, PostgreSQL with Sequelize, JWT authentication, CRUD routes, error-handling middleware, and environment configuration. The agent pulls the file that matches your task, so asking about JWT and about Sequelize are two different requests.

The skill does not install anything for you. If express, sequelize or a JWT library is missing from your project, the examples in references/ will not run until you add them. Worth checking package.json before asking the agent to generate code from those guides.

What it helps with

  • stand up a REST API on Express from scratch
  • build a middleware chain for logging and validation
  • protect routes with JWT checks
  • connect PostgreSQL through Sequelize
  • set up one error handler and env-based config

Example prompts for the agent

  • build an Express server with a /health route and an error handler
  • add JWT auth to the protected routes from the references guide
  • connect PostgreSQL via Sequelize and write the CRUD routes

How to install nodejs-express-server

1Skills CLI (Vercel)

npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill nodejs-express-server -a claude-code

2Manually: put the files in place

~/.claude/skills/nodejs-express-server/SKILL.md

Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nodejs-express-server/

Questions about nodejs-express-server

How do I install nodejs-express-server in Claude?

Run npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill nodejs-express-server -a claude-code. The skill file lands at ~/.claude/skills/nodejs-express-server/SKILL.md.

What does nodejs-express-server do?

It tells the agent how to build Express.js servers: routing, middleware, authentication, database integration, error handling. It also carries reference files under references/.

Do I need to install anything else for the skill to work?

The skill only describes the approach and examples. Packages like express, sequelize and a JWT library have to be added to your project, or the code in references/ will not run.

## Overview

Create robust Express.js applications with proper routing, middleware chains, authentication mechanisms, and database integration following industry best practices.

## When to Use

- Building REST APIs with Node.js
- Implementing server-side request handling
- Creating middleware chains for cross-cutting concerns
- Managing authentication and authorization
- Connecting to databases from Node.js
- Implementing error handling and logging

## Quick Start

Minimal working example:

```javascript
const express = require("express");
const app = express();
const PORT = process.env.PORT || 3000;
// Middleware
app.use(express.json());
app.use(express.urlencoded({ extended: true }));
// Routes
app.get("/health", (req, res) => {
  res.json({ status: "OK", timestamp: new Date().toISOString() });
});
// Error handling
app.use((err, req, res, next) => {
  console.error(err.stack);
  res.status(err.status || 500).json({
    error: err.message,
    requestId: req.id,
  });
});
app.listen(PORT, () => {
  console.log(`Server running on port ${PORT}`);
});
```

## Best Practices

### ✅ DO

- Use middleware for cross-cutting concerns
- Implement proper error handling
- Validate input data before processing
- Use async/await for async operations
- Implement authentication on protected routes
- Use environment variables for configuration
- Add logging and monitoring
- Use HTTPS in production
- Implement rate limiting
- Keep route handlers focused and small

### ❌ DON'T

- Handle errors silently
- Store sensitive data in code
- Use synchronous operations in routes
- Forget to validate user input
- Implement authentication in route handlers
- Use callback hell (use promises/async-await)
- Expose stack traces in production
- Trust client-side validation only
