nodejs-backend-patterns — Claude Code skill: Node.js backend patterns
Tells the agent how to build Express and Fastify servers: middleware, error handling, auth, database integration.
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents
/plugin install javascript-typescript@claude-code-workflowsWhat nodejs-backend-patterns does
The skill covers backend work on Node.js: REST and GraphQL servers, microservices, authentication and authorization, middleware, SQL and NoSQL integration, WebSockets, background jobs. Your agent picks it up when you ask for a server or an API.
What is inside is a list of practices: TypeScript, custom error classes, input validation with Zod or Joi, secrets in environment variables, structured logging through Pino or Winston, rate limiting, CORS without * in production, connection pooling, health checks, graceful shutdown. Longer worked examples sit in references/details.md, which the agent reads when the short tier is not enough. Testing guidance lives in a separate skill, javascript-testing-patterns.
The advice is framework-level, so you still choose your ORM and wire up the infrastructure yourself. If your project already has its own error-handling style, parts of the list will clash with it.
What it helps with
- stand up a REST API on Express or Fastify
- add middleware and one error format
- connect a SQL or NoSQL database with pooling
- implement authentication and authorization
- set up structured logging and health checks
Example prompts for the agent
- Build a Fastify REST API with Zod input validation
- Add error-handling middleware and Pino logging to my server
- Split this backend into microservices and show where secrets should live
How to install nodejs-backend-patterns
1Plugin marketplace
/plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents/plugin install javascript-typescript@claude-code-workflowsThis installs the whole javascript-typescript plugin with all its skills
2Skills CLI (Vercel)
npx skills add wshobson/agents --skill nodejs-backend-patterns -a claude-code3Manually: put the files in place
~/.claude/skills/nodejs-backend-patterns/SKILL.mdCopy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nodejs-backend-patterns/
1Skills CLI (Vercel)
npx skills add wshobson/agents --skill nodejs-backend-patterns -a codex2Manually: put the files in place
.agents/skills/nodejs-backend-patterns/SKILL.mdFor all projects use ~/.agents/skills/
1Skills CLI (Vercel)
npx skills add wshobson/agents --skill nodejs-backend-patterns -a cursor2Manually: put the files in place
.cursor/skills/nodejs-backend-patterns/SKILL.mdCursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/
1GitHub CLI
gh skill install wshobson/agents nodejs-backend-patterns2Manually: put the files in place
.github/skills/nodejs-backend-patterns/SKILL.mdPlatform CLI
gemini skills install https://github.com/wshobson/agents --path plugins/javascript-typescript/skills/nodejs-backend-patternsManually: put the files in place
.devin/skills/nodejs-backend-patterns/SKILL.mdThe legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

Questions about nodejs-backend-patterns
How do I install nodejs-backend-patterns in Claude Code?
Through the marketplace: run /plugin marketplace add wshobson/agents, then /plugin install javascript-typescript@claude-code-workflows. You can also use npx skills add wshobson/agents --skill nodejs-backend-patterns -a claude-code, which puts the file at ~/.claude/skills/nodejs-backend-patterns/SKILL.md.
What does nodejs-backend-patterns do?
It gives the agent a set of Node.js backend practices: middleware, error handling, authentication, database integration, API design. The skill activates when you build a server, a REST or GraphQL API, or a microservice.
Where are the detailed pattern examples?
In references/details.md inside the skill. The main file stays short and points there for deeper examples.

--- name: nodejs-backend-patterns description: Build production-ready Node.js backend services with Express/Fastify, implementing middleware patterns, error handling, authentication, database integration, and API design best practices. Use when creating Node.js servers, REST APIs, GraphQL backends, or microservices architectures. --- # Node.js Backend Patterns Comprehensive guidance for building scalable, maintainable, and production-ready Node.js backend applications with modern frameworks, architectural patterns, and best practices. ## When to Use This Skill - Building REST APIs or GraphQL servers - Creating microservices with Node.js - Implementing authentication and authorization - Designing scalable backend architectures - Setting up middleware and error handling - Integrating databases (SQL and NoSQL) - Building real-time applications with WebSockets - Implementing background job processing ## Detailed patterns and worked examples Detailed pattern documentation lives in `references/details.md`. Read that file when the navigation tier above is insufficient. ## Best Practices 1. **Use TypeScript**: Type safety prevents runtime errors 2. **Implement proper error handling**: Use custom error classes 3. **Validate input**: Use libraries like Zod or Joi 4. **Use environment variables**: Never hardcode secrets 5. **Implement logging**: Use structured logging (Pino, Winston) 6. **Add rate limiting**: Prevent abuse 7. **Use HTTPS**: Always in production 8. **Implement CORS properly**: Don't use `*` in production 9. **Use dependency injection**: Easier testing and maintenance 10. **Write tests**: Unit, integration, and E2E tests 11. **Handle graceful shutdown**: Clean up resources 12. **Use connection pooling**: For databases 13. **Implement health checks**: For monitoring 14. **Use compression**: Reduce response size 15. **Monitor performance**: Use APM tools ## Testing Patterns See `javascript-testing-patterns` skill for comprehensive testing guidance.
