What nginx-configuration does

The skill covers the usual Nginx jobs: putting a reverse proxy in front of a backend, spreading traffic across services, terminating SSL/TLS, HTTP/2 and gRPC, caching with compression, rate limiting and DDoS protection, URL rewriting and routing. API gateway patterns get their own section.

What you get is a minimal nginx.conf example with worker settings, logging and an http block, plus deeper material in the references/ directory: production configuration, an HTTPS server with load balancing, a setup script and monitoring. A practices list sits alongside it — HTTP/2, strong ciphers, upstream connection pooling, stub_status or prometheus, security headers, least_conn. The don'ts are spelled out too: weak ciphers, caching authenticated responses, exposing backends directly, serving HTTP and HTTPS without a redirect.

Six platforms are supported, and each one has its own install command and file path, so a config written for one does not carry over to another by itself. Weak ciphers and cached sensitive data are the mistakes that reach real users, so read the generated file before you deploy it.

What it helps with

  • stand up a reverse proxy in front of a backend
  • split traffic across several services
  • terminate SSL/TLS with strong ciphers
  • turn on response caching and compression
  • throttle request rates and blunt simple DDoS

Example prompts for the agent

  • Write an Nginx config that reverse-proxies to my app on port 3000
  • Set up load balancing across two backends with least_conn
  • Add SSL/TLS termination and redirect HTTP to HTTPS

How to install nginx-configuration

1Skills CLI (Vercel)

npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill nginx-configuration -a claude-code

2Manually: put the files in place

~/.claude/skills/nginx-configuration/SKILL.md

Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/nginx-configuration/

Questions about nginx-configuration

How do I install nginx-configuration in Claude Code?

Run npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill nginx-configuration -a claude-code. The skill file lands at ~/.claude/skills/nginx-configuration/SKILL.md.

What does nginx-configuration do?

It guides the agent through Nginx configuration: reverse proxy, load balancing, SSL/TLS, caching, rate limits and API gateway setups. A starter example and reference guides in references/ come with it.

Which platforms support this skill?

Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode. Each platform has its own install command, so pick the one you use.

## Overview

Master Nginx configuration for production-grade web servers, reverse proxies, load balancing, SSL termination, caching, and API gateway patterns with advanced performance tuning.

## When to Use

- Reverse proxy setup
- Load balancing between backend services
- SSL/TLS termination
- HTTP/2 and gRPC support
- Caching and compression
- Rate limiting and DDoS protection
- URL rewriting and routing
- API gateway functionality

## Quick Start

Minimal working example:

```nginx
# /etc/nginx/nginx.conf
user nginx;
worker_processes auto;
worker_rlimit_nofile 65535;
error_log /var/log/nginx/error.log warn;
pid /var/run/nginx.pid;
events {
    worker_connections 4096;
    use epoll;
    multi_accept on;
}
http {
    include /etc/nginx/mime.types;
    default_type application/octet-stream;
    # Logging
    log_format main '$remote_addr - $remote_user [$time_local] "$request" '
                    '$status $body_bytes_sent "$http_referer" '
                    '"$http_user_agent" "$http_x_forwarded_for"';
    log_format upstream_time '$remote_addr - $remote_user [$time_local] '
                            '"$request" $status $body_bytes_sent '
                            '"$http_referer" "$http_user_agent" '
// ... (see reference guides for full implementation)
```

## Best Practices

### ✅ DO

- Use HTTP/2 for performance
- Enable SSL/TLS with strong ciphers
- Implement proper caching strategies
- Use upstream connection pooling
- Monitor with stub_status or prometheus
- Rate limit to prevent abuse
- Add security headers
- Use least_conn load balancing
- Keep error logs separate from access logs

### ❌ DON'T

- Disable gzip compression
- Use weak SSL ciphers
- Cache authenticated responses
- Allow direct access to backends
- Ignore upstream health checks
- Mix HTTP and HTTPS without redirect
- Use default error pages in production
- Cache sensitive user data
