responsive-web-design — Claude Code skill for adaptive layouts
A skill that steers your coding agent toward mobile-first CSS with Flexbox, Grid and media queries. Useful when one layout has to hold up on phones and desktops.
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill responsive-web-design -a claude-codeWhat responsive-web-design does
The skill hands the agent a mobile-first workflow: base styles for narrow screens first, breakpoints after, written as @media (min-width: ...). The quick-start example covers a flex .container, a card and a grid-template-columns: 1fr grid, then extends them for tablet and desktop.
Five reference files sit in the references/ directory: media query strategy, Flexbox navigation, CSS Grid layout, responsive typography and a cards component. The agent pulls the one that matches the piece of UI you are working on.
One thing to watch: the inline example cuts off mid-media-query, so the full implementations live in the reference guides. If your project already has its own breakpoint scale, swap the sample values for yours — otherwise you end up maintaining two grids that disagree.
What it helps with
- build a layout that reflows from one column to several
- write navigation that collapses on narrow screens
- set breakpoints the mobile-first way
- scale typography across viewport widths
- turn cards into a reusable responsive component
Example prompts for the agent
- build a responsive card grid with CSS Grid, mobile-first
- rewrite the nav with Flexbox so it collapses on phones
- add tablet and desktop media queries to this component

## Overview
Build mobile-first responsive interfaces using modern CSS techniques including Flexbox, Grid, and media queries to create adaptable user experiences.
## When to Use
- Multi-device applications
- Mobile-first development
- Accessible layouts
- Flexible UI systems
- Cross-browser compatibility
## Quick Start
Minimal working example:

.container {
display: flex;
flex-direction: column;
padding: 16px;
gap: 16px;
}

.container {
flex-direction: row;
// ... (see reference guides for full implementation)
```
